Introduction to Figurative Sculpture

All levels – beginners welcome

Workshop Dates
  • Friday, May 31: 7:00 – 8:00 pm Sculpture Demonstration
  • Saturday, June 1: 10:00 am – 4:00 pm (one hour lunch break)
  • Sunday, June 2: 10:00 am – 4:00 pm (one hour lunch break)
Workshop Content

This introductory sculpture workshop focuses on facial features to teach the principles of figurative sculpture. You will model in clay a 4-5 inch facial feature: an eye, nose, mouth and ear.

Class Format

The instructor will demonstrate the sculpting technique. You will then copy an existing sculpture. You will develop eye training by observing the three-dimensional forms. Emphasis is on developing an understanding of sculpture language, form and plane. You will familiarize yourself with working in clay and using sculpture tools.

Class Content

This class does not cover detailed anatomical exploration or naming of musculature. The emphasis is on creating a strong sculptural shape by observing the “landmarks” of the face and understanding the structural relationship between the high and low points of the surface, where the plane changes direction and the angle of the planes.

See examples of previous class work at the bottom of the webpage.

Participants work in a water-based ceramic clay that will be fired in a kiln. As it takes time for the sculptures to dry properly before firing, you will need to come back a few weeks after the class ends to pick up your fired sculptures.

If you would like to paint your sculptures after they have been fired, sign up for the Paint & Finish Session.

Materials and Supplies

All materials are included. Sculpture tools are available in the studio for participants to use through-out the workshop. We work with a water-based clay that is non-toxic however some people find it drying on the skin. In this case you may wish to bring some light gardening type gloves or rubber gloves. Most people do work directly with the clay.

What to Expect

Participants will be standing at sculpture stands for most of the day. Prepare to wear comfortable shoes. Materials provided.

Picking Up Your Sculptures:

After the workshop ends, your sculptures will need to dry and be fired in a kiln. The studio will contact you when they are ready to be picked up, normally within a few weeks. If you would like to apply a finish to your fired sculptures, consider registering for the Cold Finish Session
